オイカワやヌマムツとよく似るが体の中心に黒い線が入ること、カワムツは背鰭前縁が赤くなるのに対し、ヌマムツは胸鰭と腹鰭前縁が赤くなることで見分けられる。当初、オイカワと共に属名 Leuciscusとされたが、のちにどちらもZacco（オイカワのページ参照）とされていたが、2008年にオイカワの属するハス属Opsariichthysとは別のカワムツ属Nipponocyprisにヌマムツなどと共に移された*。
