About the Institute

Kuroshio Biological Research Institute is a public interest incorporated foundation focused on marine biology research and education. Established in October 2001, the institute aims to sustain a society where people and nature coexist. It contributes by supporting basic research on marine life and the environment, and by promoting public awareness and conservation research through the Kuroshio Current ecosystem, a biodiversity hub.

Kuroshio Biological Research Institute is situated next to the ocean along the coast in Otsuki town, southern Kochi Prefecture, Shikoku-Japan in a region influenced by Kuroshio Current.

The institute conducts various research projects in marine sciences, including land-dwelling organisms such as those living on coasts, rivers, and mountainous areas in the location. We collect and organize information on ecosystems in areas strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current and compare them with other regions. Through this, the institute’s research aims to understand how the environment shaped by the Kuroshio Current affects the organisms that inhabit it.

The Institute rigorously conducts field surveys and research as a basis for collecting and disseminating information on the organisms and environment of the surrounding area. It also welcomes foreign researchers and actively engages in educational and awareness activities, cooperating with local residents.
